Its the weekend so I highly doubt that anyone is reading this. Oh well. You cant see the sideburn in the 2nd picture if you're wondering whats different.

Hey, I had great difficulty trying to colour this. Would you like to have a go? [info]jabberworks drawing of me in dublin influenced this a huge amount. (Oh and hey Sarah wasn't there a couple of sketches from that weekend that you haven't posted yet? I'd love to see that stuff)

Unsure of the colours in this. Was trying to emulate the colours of the original moleskine scan and then added some colours on top of that. (im in my last year of college in case you are wondering why I haven't posted in a while) Oh well, it's a nice drawing, I can always recolour it. Might use it for twitter or something. (I think the chair stands out too much)

These highly territorial arthropods descended from meta-sapien bioweapons. Highly aggressive, they charge intruders and attempt to ram them with the hardened plating around their heads.

An open letter that no one will read

Dear television industry,

First of all, I think it's great how in recent years you've upped the quality of your dramatic series in light of the potential money that can be made by selling DVD boxed sets. That quality sells, and that you realize this, is a great thing. And I also want to say that I don't mind paying for the content that I consume. I may be dirt poor, but 95% of the music I own is stuff that I have paid for, as are 100% of the movies. This puts me in a shrinking demographic, but I've always felt that artists deserve to be paid for their work- even if those "artists" are massive entertainment conglomerates. But please explain to me, if you can, why you expect me to pay two hundred dollars for the privilege of watching the Battlestar Galactica series? This is outrageous. Even if I had the $200 to spare, even if I was so excited about the series that I needed to see it (I am not so excited- all my friends think I should watch it, but I remain skeptical), this is an entirely unreasonable amount of money to spend. Especially given that A.) the whole thing would have been free if I had been quick on my feet and watched it diligently as it was first released, and B.) the whole thing is, I am quite sure, easily found for free on the internet right now.

I feel that most consumers are willing to pay for content that can be found elsewhere for free if you can give them enough reason to pay, or if paying is a more (not less) convenient way of acquiring or accessing it. But not when the amount they must pay is so unreasonable. Once you calculate in repeat viewings, I can easily get more entertainment-hours-per-dollar out of nearly any other medium- CDs, books, comics, movies on DVD, computer games, anything. Suffice to say, I will not be buying this DVD set.

Sincerely,
some guy on the internet.

Weekend Update

14th. Nov, 2009 | 05:12 pm

I was thinking today about how boring it is to read LiveJournal and the internet in general on the weekend so I decided to do my part and put something here on the internet for you because I'm so thoughtful and I care about your well-being! Also I am procrastinating because I need to clean the house.

Anyway!

I was thinking I might share with you some of the origins of Freewheel. I'm going to start with the title. Have you ever heard of a band called Team Dresch? Yes? Well you have good taste. No? Well I'm about to share them with you so hold your horses!

I discovered Team Dresch too late, naturally, as they had already broken up by the early 00's when I first got into them. They've since re-formed, or so I've heard, and occasionally play shows but true to my nature, I missed them the last time they came to NYC in 2007 because I heard about the show after it had already sold out (this always happens to me) and it was the same weekend as MoCCA! What the fuck! Kaia Wilson, one of their singers, went on to do a lot of solo acoustic guitar type stuff and was also in a band called the Butchies, which I had the good fortune of getting to see several times in the early 00's while Team Dresch was still broken up.

Here's a video I found on YouTube of the Butchies playing live, I think it showcases their awesome live show, which was really what they excelled at and is truly what made me a fan.

Also, Kaia Wilson is super hot, which doesn't hurt. I actually have a theory that most women who are attracted to other women have at least a brief period of having a really big crush on Kaia Wilson. Here is some photographic evidence to support that claim.

So yeah, when I was coming up with a title for the comic that eventually became "Freewheel," I had quite literally spent an entire evening sitting in my friend's apartment spouting off random words and phrases for the comic's title and was getting nowhere.

It came really close to being called "Tramps" but I decided the word had some more "adult" connotations and people might get confused. I got to a point where I was just sitting there reciting names of things I saw in the room. Chair, door, bookcase - these were all potential titles! So, although I was trying so hard to avoid it this time around (My Brain Hurts is named after a Screeching Weasel song) I figured I had to go to my record collection and my iTunes library and try to get some inspiration (or you know, blatantly steal) from song titles.

Team Dresch have a song called "Freewheel" which is obviously what my comic is named after, more specifically I was inspired by the line "I got no money left and the mean world around me." The general spirit of the song made me think it would be a good title for the comic, not to mention the word itself conjures up someone with a free spirited nature, a dreamer, someone who doesn't quite have both feet on the ground, which the character of Jamie most definitely embodied. It made sense. Freewheel it was.

Plus, it didn't make me embarrassed when people asked me what my comic was called, to say "Freewheel" I always cringe a little whenever I have to say "My Brain Hurts."

Here's Team Dresch performing "Freewheel" live back in 2007:

whole lot of things to say but i can't seem to hold on
moved away it pulls me back to what i miss
like talking talking talking to the mad queen about emotional evolution
well i do what i do and i don't need you
to tell me what's in and tell me who is cool
i've got no money left and the mean world around me
and i don't need that girl
to watch TV with
she's just the same girl
over and over and over and you
can go back to your boyfriend
half of this is me and i'm not sure who the other is
she maybe came from all of you
this house is warm i think i'll take a nap
just like Freewheel, Freewheel!!!

Twenty-nine doesn't seem so bad. Thanks to everyone who wished me well yesterday; I'm still too groggy/tired/lazy for individual responses. :D

There were hairy moments, mostly when I realised food hadn't been planned for nearly enough, and I was also partly expecting the same amount of things-brought-by-guests as had happened at [info]wolven's party. Even if it was a reasonable expectation, never expect things, because it always goes tits up.

I don't know why I'm still on the computer, right now. I took my clothes out to get dressed, and then, bam. Inertia. It's irritating, because of the overwhelming urge to go thrift-storing or to the art supply store. I got some money from my dad, the really urgent bills have been dealt with, and now I want to get canvases and root through (formerly) other people's clothing.

There was fire, despite that I hadn't made it into the backyard to collect wood for drying in the past week. There were boobs shown. There's still lots of booze, including a pecan liqueur that sounds better than it actually is, though it was a hit for the people who like the sugary stuff. And people actually brought me things. A couple of books, including A Field Guide to Surreal Botany. Markers and a canvas. A HUGE bag of seeds to root through (Root? Get it? I should be hit for that one, unintended as it was.). I believe [info]tsarina_bomba invoked Loki at some point, but I'd had a goodly amount of Jäger by then and may have constructed that memory or misheard things.

Ok, no, I did not mishear, because I now distinctly remember her asking me for permission to do so, and being thoroughly puzzled by this.

[info]wolven left at some stupidly early point while I was asleep to deliver [info]tsarina_bomba and her husband to the airport, so they could go visit his family up in NY. I woke at nine-thirty, worried that he wasn't back yet (he was) and laid there until ten convincing myself that even if he weren't, he could fend for himself, when I passed out again until eleven thirty.

He is still awake, against my better judgment and advice.

Oh, and yoinked from [info]lupabitch, for [info]raoin and probably others, the Litany Against Kittens:

'I must not come home with kittens.
Kittens are the common-sense killer.
Kittens are the little fuzzballs that bring "deth by cute".
I will face the kittens.
I will permit them to climb over me and on top of my head.
And when they have fallen asleep in my lap I will carefully give them back to the shelter volunteers.
Where the kittens have gone there will be deflected cuteness.
Only I will remain (sad and now kitten-less).'

I like being a night person. The best TV shows are on at night, my family is all asleep and not lecturing at me, there's nobody on the road if I want to go for a drive, and I just generally like nighttime. But with nowhere to go, nothing to do, nobody to hang out with, and not even being able to use the Internet... it just gets so dang boring. D:

On the getting kicked out moving out of my own choice front:
Gah, I'm just waiting around for my mom to e-mail me back about whether I can move some of my stuff up there and whatever. Also, to see whether or not I can get out of here for Thanksgiving (man, I didn't even realize the stupid holidays were almost here...). Stress stress stress, blah blah blah, same as always. :(

here it is ... at last.

my very first animated short film (eventhough 14 minutes aren't that short ...).
i haven't ever done this before or worked in flash or cut programs aso.
it took me 2 months of every day down to the bown work into the nights. sure it has its flaws and we had problems with the voices (its German and has no English subtitle ...yet) ... but knowing that i could only get this far in that short time made me want to make the best out of it. i ignored many rules that the teacher told us but i just wanted to let my vision come to life. even if hardly anybody understands what the hell is going on in this film hehe. its kinda a homage to all i love. from rocknroll to cheap sci-fi movies ... its all in there.

but before you go to the links, yes, the voices are bad like i said and sadly the program FinalCut fubked up some of my flash animations ... also the quality of some pencil animations.

so ... 'nough with the talk ... enjoy the ride!

If the videos for some reason don't work (like in Germany for some region issues)
I uploaded the on Vimeo ... eventhough some of the timing is fucked up by them.

OK, ... next up ZURF ZOMBIES MUST DIE ... a surf comic

The other day I had a thought. It went something like this:
"hhhm, I want to post about something but it's not really useful, kind of inane. It's not really livejournal worthy, probably better for Twitter."

So now I have a Twitter account. I'm not proud or anything, but what do you know? It's fun.

ANOTHER thing I just started doing is watching Star Trek generations! They started showing it on TV around 11 every weeknight so now [info]mrcolossal and I watch it every day.

I have to admitt, I have the same feelings about it that I had about Twitter! That it would suck and be boring, but what do you know? It's pretty awesome.

ANYWAY here is some fucking ridiculous Star Trek shit I have come across in my travels:

These are pretty cool, little model drawings of all the ship's rooms:

LOOK AT THIS WEBSITE, this woman makes not only Trek paintings, but LABYRINTH TOO not to mention FIVE PAGES OF SNAPE ART!!!!

My favorite:

I fucking hate Q and the Holodeck and love Picard like there is no fucking tomorrow.

So come follow me on my Twitter, where I will give 2 line reviews of every Trek episode I watch every hot fucking day! Watch as I descend into dorkatudes unknown.

Another one of these things. The sketch was done over a month ago, but I've finally made the time to ink and colour the thing. Could be the last one of these for a while as I've got a bit of freelance stuff on at the moment.

Tomorrow I'll be working on another t-shirt design, this one for El Schlong, and the short film concept art is still ongoing, but once all that's out of the way I'll be starting my next music video, looking forward to that.

Have you seen the things that my friend and colleague Tim Denee made this week? Amazing.

Had a great time watching/goofing on THE SENTINEL last night with [info]weeblondhooker. I'd seen it ages ago, but had forgotten how godawful it was. Thing is, it must have one of the most star-heavy casts ever, including Christopher Walken, Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith, John Carradine, Eli Wallach, Jose Ferrer, Jeff Goldblum, Martin Balsam, Jerry Orbach, Chris Sarandon, and even Tom Berenger (who only gets one line). Everybody was in this piece of crap!
